Ocean Thoughts
Digital Art and Poem, 2022
A set of illustrations centred around a poem about one’s thoughts, stress, and rejuvenation. These were made based on a poem I wrote in companionship with a personal narrative written for my creative writing class. They were also submitted to UW's creator collective's Gallery: Spectra.

Writing
I started by writing a poem of the same name. Because it was based on this personal narrative, the idea and concept were already determined, so the poem was written using that basis. I edited and rearranged the lines and verses a few times, one verse was even removed from the final version, until I was overall content with it.
Illustrations
I separated the poem into 4 main parts (the second of which was later removed from the final version) that I felt encompassed a stage for each picture to focus on. Based on these sections, I made rough sketches for each illustration on paper and then started sketching those images in photoshop. I rearranged and edited the images on the pages, added some blending effects and shading, and then inserted the poem text, which is in my personal handwritten font. After a bit of clean-up and editing, the pieces were complete. After a final look, I decided to remove the second page from the lineup, as I felt it didn’t fit with the other verses, and I didn’t like how the final turned out.
Afterthoughts
This was a tougher project as I’m not as familiar with digital art and drawing. Most of this was drawn with a tablet in photoshop using the brush tool instead of my normal process of making and overlaying pen-drawn shapes. You can see that transition and mix from the first picture to the final one. However, I think this was a good practice, and I’m happy with how they turned out. It’s a really meaningful piece to me, and I’m glad I tried this.
