Ideation
The first step was determining a specific problem space we as a team wanted to tackle. After considering the RSA's 2022-23 design briefs, we decided on Tomorrow's Menu: "How might we promote new relationships to food that are more secure, regenerative and culturally appropriate?" To address the cultural aspect, we decided on focus on food security problems international students in Canada might face while studying abroad.
With our problem space decided, we began conducting research, both primary and secondary, to learn more about how university students feel about their own food security, cooking skills, and mental health. From our secondary research, we found that food and food security was connected to feelings of homesickness and stress in university students. It was especially high for students who lived away from home or abroad as they had less access to culturally similar cuisine and recipes. Our primary research (which was an online survey among University of Waterloo students) supported these findings.
Below are the proposal boards summarizing our research and a video pitch for our overall idea (yes, that is my arm and head struggling to stay out of frame in the video pitch).

The Logo
Designing the logo was one of the toughest parts of creating the app brand. How do you represent food, cooking, culture, and security all in one image? Making the logo took a lot of back and forth, research, ideation, and brainstorming between Kathrina and me.
We went through a lot of ideas, sketches, and concepts ranging from text, cutlery, pans, and globes until we landed on a cute, friendly, bowl. We and the rest of the team absolutely loved it, and Kath made an incredible final graphic of it (trust me, my original sketch for the idea was a disservice to our mascot).
Meet Ted! TasteFull's lovely little mascot and friend. He looks so warm and full!

App Wireframe and Prototype
Our solution to help students was to create a food and recipe app that allowed users to track their pantry ingredients and expiration dates, find recipes, and make personal meal plans. Here you can see some of the wireframing process and final prototype. If you want to test the prototype for yourself, you can find it here: bit.ly/tastefull

Big Idea and Hero Boards
To present out final concept and app prototype, we produced a short animation and slideshow presentation to explain the idea and research behind Tastefull. We decided to use a short animation to tell a story and explain our target market and goal in an empathetic way, whereas the slides go in more depth as the technical and analytical work done. The graphics in the animation were hand drawn by another team member and then given to me to animate.

Afterthoughts
This was a really fun project to work on. While it's not a fully fledged app and product, it was insightful making an app prototype and including multicultural inclusivity. This wouldn't have been possible without the incredible and talented team members and friends.
